Should You Change Your AC Unit’s Air Filter More During Summer?

Posted on Air Quality June 20, 2018

During the summer months, your air conditioning system has to work harder to maintain a cool and comfortable atmosphere in your home. Many people wonder how to best maintain their HVAC systems during the high-demand cooling season. You may question whether it’s important to change the filter in your air conditioner more frequently.

The Purpose of the Air Filter

In an air conditioning system, the air filter plays an important role in efficiency and indoor air quality. As your system runs, it pulls air throughout the home through a duct return. With the air come all types of pollutants, including pet hair, pollen, dander, dirt, dust mites, biological agents, and other debris. When the contaminants enter your HVAC system, they can impact the system’s operating efficiency and decrease the quality of the air you breathe.

An air filter near the front of the air conditioning unit traps these particles before they can move into the ducts or other components of the HVAC system.

Risks of a Dirty Air Filter

In addition to poor indoor air quality, a dirty air filter can cause other issues with your HVAC system and overall home comfort. Dirt and debris could move through the unit and build up on the fans and coils, which can cause the coils to freeze or malfunction. When these situations occur, your air conditioner can break down, requiring an expensive repair or replacement, and leaving you without a working air conditioner.

Change the Filter

Check your filter more frequently during the summer to make sure it’s clean and able to trap particles before they move through the system. When the AC has to work harder, it’s worth investing a few extra dollars in more regular air filter changes.
